Roy Tanner's Positions and Views on These Issues:
Profile for Roy Tanner
General: (political statement of goals, objectives, views, philosophies)
As a life-long Republican, I was ecstatic in 2004 when 60-million "values" voters turned-out to add to conservative majorities in state and federal government. Conversely, I was disillusioned in 2005 with the continued obstruction over border and port security, out of control federal spending, and the Senate filibuster of conservative judicial nominees. Clearly, placing our trust in "career" politicians, to deliver on the conservative mandate, has been in vain.

That's when I decided to run for the U.S. Senate (as an independent), to unseat a liberal incumbent who faced little threat from the Republican front-runner. As a reformer, I'll ensure greater accountability from career politicos who put their own reelection bids ahead of principle. Research confirms that "careerism" in Washington -- the overriding concern with staying in the game of politics rather than serving the people -- is at the root of everything from budget deficits, to legislative obstruction, to the unparalleled levels of corruption.

Partisanship in Congress is why elected representatives are quickly seduced into becoming "career" politicians who won't push for change. Unfortunately the two-party system compromises even the most reform-minded public servants with promises of power and influence, as evidenced by $47-billion in "pork-barrel" projects annually, which divert our tax dollars and deepen our debt. By refusing to accept special interest funding and pledging to serve only a single term, I'm free to act in your best interests by objectively focusing on the difficult choices confronting the nation.

Again, this campaign is about reforming the political process, either through attaining higher-office or raising awareness to the point that we influence political outcomes. While the media usually focuses on major-party candidates, history offers compelling evidence (from Teddy Roosevelt to Ross Perot) that third-party candidates can influence election results by bringing issues to the public agenda that the two-party system otherwise prefers to avoid, namely:

1) The Security of the Free World - Engaged in a two-front war on terror and facing emerging nuclear threats, America must speak with one voice on U.S. foreign policy.

2) The Solvency of the Nation - Facing $46-trillion in unfunded entitlements, immediate bipartisan action is needed for fiscal restraint on out of control federal spending.

3) The Sanctity of Life - Given the "brave new world" of biological breakthroughs unbridled by bio-ethics, the federal government must protect life from womb to the tomb.

Only a small percentage of non-partisan public servants need to be elected to hold our two-party system accountable. That's why I'm asking you to send Congress a message this year by voting for principle reform over party affiliation, by adopting a new process versus just another "career" politician. Given the perils that threaten the American experiment, how can we do anything less?

With your support, I believe we can summon the resources necessary to complete America's mandate for change.

May God continue to bless these United States,

Roy J. Tanner
